My Top EPs of 2011

Over the next couple days, I will be counting down my top 15 favorite albums from 2011.  The list is obviously not comprehensive—I wish I had listened to every album that was released this year.  Of course this isn’t the authoritative list, and I welcome feedback, but please understand that this is based on personal feelings more than anything else.  I’ve also tried to keep my synopses short because I know attention spans are fleeting, and I’d rather you know what I’m talking about through the music.  The rankings should speak for how I feel about them—and anything that made the list carries my stamp of approval.

Today, I’m going to start with EPs that would’ve made the list, had I not chosen to disqualify them on account of them being EPs.

Weatherbox - Follow the Rattle of the Afghan Guitar
This 6-song EP is the newest release from the band I’m most into at this moment (thanks Alec!).  Raw sounds, edgy lyrics, and catchy hooks—this band rules.

Yukon Blonde - Fire//Water
I had these guys at the Maintenance Shop, and it was one of the best sets I’ve seen—not just in the M-Shop, but ever.  This EP is a throwback to some classic rock roots.  Can’t wait for the new album.

Gayngs - Affiliyated
This Twin Cities revolving door super group includes Har Mar Superstar, Justin Vernon, the Doomtree people, and about 20 other Twin Cities-based musicians.  This particular EP is one of regrinds, covers, and originals featuring Doomtree.  My personal favorite is the pilot track “Fight, Fuck, Fall Asleep” (featuring Sims and Lazerbeak) but also check out “Sprinkle Juice” featuring Justin Vernon.
